dealing with anxiety

I had to look up the word ‘anxiety’ in my dictionary to be sure I had the right mental definition.

Anxiety: fear or nervousness about what might happen; a feeling of wanting to do something very much.

Full definition: apprehensive uneasiness or nervousness usually over an impending or anticipated ill

Medical definition: an abnormal and overwhelming sense of apprehension and fear (often marked by physical signs such as tension, sweating and increased pulse rate) concerning the reality and nature of the threat and the doubt of one’s capacity to cope with it.

Anxiety is more common than we tend to admit. It is usually associated with a fear of the unknown.

The Unknown: that’s the reason most of us stay in our comfort zones, the reason we don’t take those bold steps we have been contemplating.

Sometimes we find ourselves in difficult situations, we get anxious because:

  • we are not really sure how to deal with it
  • not sure if there’s a way out of the situation
  • we are just not sure …

As I said earlier, “fear of the unknown”

I’d like to say this: although some stressful situations are almost unavoidable, try your possible best to avoid them. Stress is one of the triggers of anxiety. It could be stress from your workplace, relationship, financial worries, health related issues, your academics, etc.

The truth is that no matter how much you worry about a particular problem, it doesn’t solve the problem or make it any less. The truth also is that most of us know this but we (myself included) worry nevertheless. I learnt quite recently that a ‘problem’ isn’t a problem if it does not have a solution. Now isn’t that great news to know that for any situation to qualify to be a problem, it already has a solution. All you need now is to find it.

How to find the solution:

First of all, don’t underestimate yourself. It is easy to be overwhelmed by a particular problem, that you feel like it’s the end of the world. Pause…excuse yourself from the situation in order to think with a clear head.

Thinking on it’s own might not provide a solution, try talking to someone about it. In the heat of the moment, the solution might be right in front of you but you are too anxious to recognize it. It’s happened to me a couple of times>>>I thought I was in a situation and I knew I was not thinking clearly to see a solution, I called a friend and in a couple of minutes, we were laughing about the whole situation.

The Power of Prayer; in looking for a solution, it doesn’t just end in asking a friend. There are situations your friend wouldn’t be able to help you with. Matter of fact, his/her input might make the whole situation worse. In times like this, although you may not feel like it, just say a word of prayer and I guarantee you, if you pay attention, the solution would come to you.
